[attr="class","monty"]The desert that appeared in front of Montgomery wasn't unlike the ones he'd encountered in unova with howard slayte. It was sweltering, and mere seconds of standing in the sand pits caused sweat to build up beneath his clothes. They clung heavily on his body, leaving a sticky tack as it dried.

The realm itself, however, was something unlike anything he'd seen before. The rocky pillars didn't appear natural in any sense. They were too structured and organized to be of natural creation.

"Is this where he is?" he thought to himself.

With his hat to shade him, Montgomery began a slow trek through the sands, looking for signs of movement and life. In the distance, he spotted a figure standing out in the dunes.

"Hey!"

Clover might have stepped too far, trying to visit the ultra space without a buddy. They were eager to prove themselves, however. It was easy to feel inadequate after failing to support the war effort on most of the front lines. He'd only managed to push back against Leaguers in the Petalburg routes. [break][break]

But he'd also succeeded. He came alone to prove to himself that he had grown stronger. He could only open his ambition didn't do him in this time. [break][break]

"No," he warned Shuckle, "keep away from those." They stood atop a dune, but the caravan line below tempted Shuckle. The shelled creature was curious to a fault. "I remember the guy who bogarts the coffee talking about these - nothing good can come from them." The guy in question was annoying to run into in HQ, but he wasn't a liar. [break][break]

The voice made Clover damn near jump out of her skin, but she did her best to look very cool and totally unsurprised. "Hey!" She waved back at the figure -- no one led an ambush with a hello, after all. "You here for the good views or what?" She grinned, covering her eyes from the sun.

[attr="class","monty"]The person spoke back. Montgomery had to heave a sigh of relief, since he was beginning to wonder if the desert's heat was beginning to affect his mind.

The stories of travelers, swearing they found a sparkling oasis, only to die of thirst in the middle of a waterless desert, echoed in his mind.

"Not quite." If he were looking for fantastic views, he'd probably have gone somewhere that wasn't so damn hot that he wanted to rip his shirt off.

Instead, he stepped through the sand and approached Clover. "I'm lookin' for somethin'. What're you doin' here alone?" he asked, sparing a small glance to the shuckle and their side.

Clover didn't feel alarmed at the man's approach given that he could've attacked already. He got closer, but even Shuckle didn't feel the need to get overly defensive - though it did eyeball the man's ankles in a way that alarmed Clover slightly. [break][break]

"I wanna explore these rifts in space before they're blocked off for everyone." They were blocked off to most of the public already, but she suspected that access to them was going to become even more restricted. "They're really spectacular areas. I've been to the Plant a lot and even saw a live Regieleki. There's a lot to learn from these weird rifts, and I think it's stupid to avoid visiting when I'm strong enough to survive it."[break][break]

They jutted their chin out a little, as if daring the other man to disagree. "But it's always easier in pairs." She extended a hand to shake. "I'm Clover."

[attr="class","monty"]Montgomery eyed the shuckle. Despite it being a few feet away, the Pokemon's eyes didn't seem to look up at him. Rather, they were fixated on his legs.

Weird.

"These things shouldn't even exist..." It was mostly a comment to himself, but Montgomery didn't mind if Clover overheard his true feelings on the matter.

"Montgomery. Nice to-"

Before he could finish his introduction, a rumble in the ground caught him off guard. In the distance, a large metallic body emerged, diving down again.

And it seemed to be coming at them.

"C'mon, move!"

Whether the rifts should have or should not have existed, Clover felt enthralled at the reality that they did. New areas to explore, and these were lands that had yet to be colonized. They were completely natural beyond a few outcroppings from travelers. The ultra beasts inside and the general ecology of it all... Clover loved its wildness. [break][break]

The giant orthoworm was no exception. She followed Montgomery but her laugh was thrilled rather than terrified. "Mr. Montgomery, y'know those 'worms are rideable, right?" He let the implicit suggestion hang in the air to see how the other man would react to the concept. Clover was no masterful rider, but she had taken a liking to wild pokemon like Zarude and had developed a greater appreciation for letting pokemon do as they wanted. Hell, she trusted Tropius to carry her without a harness while she was sleeping. [break][break]

What harm could one little orthoworm ride do?

The next few steps that he took forward, another orthworm appeared, emerging from the sand like it was water. It towered above them.

"Fuck."

He glanced at them. "Why the hell are ya laughin'!?"

Clover looked pleased as punch even as Montgomery's patience wore thin. "If you don't wanna ride 'em, they're at least easy to handle." The orthoworm relied on their tremorsense to travel. They used dig to get around so quickly. These two elements made them wildly susceptible to the power of - "Shuck, 'quake 'em!" [break][break]

An earthquake rippled through the ground from Shuckle. It wasn't as powerful as the Shuckle could produce them, but it was more than enough to force the worms to land on the sand and slither as quickly as they could in their vertigo-riddled state. "As long as you keep something good at shakin' the ground, you're safe out here." He'd heard that from a fellow grunt in HQ, though Clover couldn't quite share that information. [break][break]

They beamed at him. "See, Mr. Montgomery? You gotta open your eyes and see all the opportunities for fun that lie out here." Clover made a sweeping gesture at the wide expanse of desert - only to be interrupted by a pair of shadowy hands that wrapped around her ankles and tugged her into the sand like a premature tomb.

His garchomp would be faster at getting them out than his own bare hands. She was thrown out, immediately delving into the sand with her claws and disappearing below.

Even he clawed at the ground as quickly as he could in some desperate attempt to save Clove's life. Looking at the shuckle, he growled.

"Would ya do something useful?"
